Patient Lifetime Value (PLV) measures the total revenue a single patient generates over the duration of their relationship with your practice. It accounts for:

  • Visit frequency: How often patients return for treatments each year
  • Retention decay: Each year, a percentage of patients stop returning — retention rate determines how steep that drop-off is
  • Referral value: Retained patients refer new patients, each with their own lifetime value
  • Compounding effect: Small improvements in retention compound dramatically over 3-5 years

The formula: PLV = Average Spend x Visits/Year x Sum of (Retention Rate ^ Year) over 5 years, plus referral revenue calculated as (Referral Rate x New Patient First-Year Value) added annually.
